The current passport requirements, the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), as of June 1, 2009, requires most US Citizens traveling via land or sea, to have a valid US Passport Booklet, US Passport Card, or other document approved by the DHS. Certain exceptions apply to all children under the age of 16 and adults traveling "closed loop" cruises, which are when you depart and arrive to the same US port. In such cases, you may still continue to use proof of citizenship, such as a copy of birth certificate and (for age 16+) also a government issued photo ID, "until further notice". If a cruise begins and ends at 2 different US ports or at any foreign port, WHTI compliance is required. It is highly recommended that all US and Canadian Citizens use either a passport, valid at least 6 months after travel date, or the passport card to exit and return to any US border via land and sea only. The cost: Age 16 and older: The passport book fee is $110 and execution fee is $35. The total is $145. Passport card is $30 and exection fee of $35. The total is $65.
Renewals: $110 (book) and $30 (card).
Under Age 16: The passport fee is $80 and execution fee is $35. The total is $115. Passport card is $15 and execution fee $35. The total is $50
Expedited service is available for an additional $60, per applicant.
